Shozo Kurokawa - Principal Cellos

Shozo Kurokawa - Principal Cellos - generously shares his taste in the tone-color of Strauss’s music. “There are many significant moments for cello in Strauss’s numerous works, “ he says. “But, I take more interest in some hidden or obscure sounds in his score. It turns out they have a superb color. Strauss is a great tone poet.”

Kurokawa praises Strauss’s valedictory Vier Ietzte Lieder as a culmination of the composer’s career. "Strauss had a beautiful life with his wife and thought of the possibility of beautiful death, “ he says. "That’s why Strauss set music to the poem Im Abendrot by Joseph von Eichendorff, which portrays two old people contemplating death after their wanderings, surviving wars and also experiencing joy." (Commentary in Japanese)
