Second Trumpet Players: 2 positions

Excellent music skills and good health are required to perform as a regular member in the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.
The candidate is requested to start working for the Orchestra by October 1, 2024. (The starting date is negotiable.)
Applicants will be selected regardless of their age and nationality.

Applications will be accepted either by physical mail or email.
The email subject should be: trumpet audition.
Required information
Please provide the following info by email:
(1) Your name
(2) Date of birth
(3) Your contact address, phone number, & e-mail address
(4) Your educational/music background
(5) Your professional experience (your experiences as a guest player for orchestras, received awards, etc.)
(6) A color ID photo
(7) URL of the YouTube visual recording of your performance for the video audition
(8) Preferred date for the first live audition between July 1, Monday or July 4, Thursday, 2024.

Screening & Video audition
-The URL of your performance video must be submitted with the application.
-Videos of candidates who did not pass the profile screening may not be auditioned.
-Video for video screening should be uploaded on YouTube as “limited public access.”
-The screening results will be notified by June 19, Wednesday, 2024.
-If you do not receive the results within a few days, please inquire at the contact points below.

Instruction on the performance video
-The recording should be of the performance of the pieces only. No voice explanation is required for the performer’s name or the name of the pieces.
-Editing between the three pieces is allowed (it is not necessary to play the pieces continuously without a break), but editing during the performance is not allowed.
-The video must be shot from the front so that the entire instrument, face, and hands can be seen.
-When uploading the video to YouTube, it must be made as "limited public access.”
-The account for posting the video does not have to be the candidate's.
-For the performance parts of the assigned works of the video audition, please send an email to with a subject line, "Tokyo Phil trumpet audition request for the performance video assigned works” in the subject line.

(2) V.Brandt: No.23 from 34 STUDIES
(3) M.Bitsch: No. 2 from VINGT ETUDES (up to 26th bar)

First live audition
Date: Choose either July 1, Monday or July 4, Thursday, 2024 (sessions begin around 5:00 PM) If not stated, we will assign you to one of the dates.
Venue: Tokyo Opera City
Assigned works:

(1) Haydn: Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major, the presentation of the first movement (up to the first beat of the 83rd bar). Piano accompaniment should start from the 32nd bar.

(2) The 2nd movement of the same work.

(3) Orchestra Study (Applicants who pass the screening & video audition will be notified by Wednesday, June 19.)

Second live audition
Successful applicants of the first live audition will be invited to the second live audition.
Date: July 23, Tuesday, 2024 (around 5:00 PM)
Venue: Tokyo Opera City
Assigned works:

(1) Haydn: Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major, the presentation of the first movement (up to the first beat of the 83rd bar).

Trial period: The successful applicant will be given an 11 months trial period with the Orchestra before the final decision about an official position is made.

Terms and Conditions will be determined based on the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra’s regulations.

Accompanist: Applicants are expected to bring her/his own piano accompanist. For the live audition only, in case you would like us to refer to an accompanist, please let us know.

The orchestra will not return any documents and materials submitted by Applicants.

The orchestra will not answer inquiries about the content of the screening/audition.

Applicants are responsible for all costs (e.g. traveling, etc.) pertaining to the audition.
